Orthodox Echoes of the Valley- Episode 1: Prayer

In the first episode of Orthodox Echoes of the Valley, Fr. Silviu Bunta explored prayer not primarily as a technique, rule, or particular set of words, but in its simplest sense: “prayer is a conversation with God.” Prayer begins whenever our mind turns toward God and we speak to Him.

Rather than waiting for the perfect time or circumstances to pray, Fr. Silviu encouraged us to weave prayer throughout ordinary life: “Glory to God,” “Lord, have mercy,” “Lord, give me strength,” “Lord, help me,” or “Lord, forgive me.” These short prayers can transform the ordinary moments of the day into opportunities to turn toward Christ.

The conversation also addressed the Jesus Prayer, distractions during prayer, prayer rules, prayer within the family, loving and praying for those who have hurt us, and prayer for the departed. When distractions come, Fr. Silviu’s practical advice was not to become discouraged but to “plow through,” trusting the Lord rather than measuring the success of our prayer.

Perhaps the strongest message came at the very end:

“Never despair… Give Christ all the misery, so that in that dirt He can grow the flowers only God can.”
